Hello:
I need some help-electrical problem. I own a 1968 Ford Galaxie, 390, two door,(not the 500 version).
I do not have power to the iginition switch or any function on the dash board (radio). The battery is good, (load tested this). I have power to the interior dome lights and can turn the parking lights on.
I turn the key an there is nothing in the acc. position or start position. The starter will not engage. I have by-passed the solonoid to see if I can engage the starter bendix to flywheel, as yes this will work.
I initially thought it was my ignition switch so I replaced it, and nothing.
I then measured all wires to the igintion switch, and none have power. I do not have a wiring diagram. So I am not shure what to look at??
I need some help.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Well you need to either locate a diagram or start at the switch and start tracing wires back until you find the issues. The Heavier wires on the switch are the ones to start with.

I would take a hard look at all wires attached to the positive battery cable on the solenoid end as they could be fusable links and could be blown. Also there should be a large connector on the firewall where all the wires connect from the engine compartment to the interior. These connectors are known for developing rotted or corroded connections. Also check to be sure the body is actually grounded. You said you had no power at any terminal at the back of the switch, where was your ground connected when you tested. If it was anywhere but the negative battery terminal the test is of no use.

Get back and let us know what you find

Thank you:
I will have to order a wiring schmatic. You have some key points to look at.
Note: When measuring power at the ignition switch, my ground was at the body. I did reference the power to the dome light ( since that was the only thing showing power) to validate the ground was good, and I good a solid 12V. But you bring a validate point, I will use the ground at the battery for reference for the trouble shooting. Thx

Found the issue

Well, I just want to reply- I found the issue. I ordered a wiring schmatic, and found the the problem in the first bulk head connector. The metal pins for the conncetion were broke appart. I spliced in a new wire and the car now starts.
Thanks

I'm in the process of ordering a wiring diagram for my 68 ltd but am desperate to know the diagram for the ballast resistor. specifically which wire is the 12v to ignition switch. I see a light blue wire which appears to be the 12V wire but need confirmation. Can you help? thanks

From Autozone.com ...
Registration is free, and they also have free "Repair Guides" that contain wiring diagrams for most makes & models.

Here is the one that both of you are looking for.
There is no "ballast resistor" per se on that car. Ford used a resistance wire from the ign switch to the positive side of the coil. According to this diagram, it should be pink.

Thanks for response. I thought I was looking at what appeared to be the ballast. It is a dual spring resistor mounted in the firewall. The springs have different # of cois (i.e. resistance). Light blue wire goes onto one side of springs , black and orange wires are connected to end of one spring and a red wire is connected to the other spring. I drew a schematic of my "ballast" in MS word but not sure how to attach it to this message.

I am installing pertronix ignition and need to connect ignitor wire to 12V line from ignition. So I was planning on splicing into light blue wire at the so-called ballast. If this dual sping resistor is not the ballast then maybe it is the heater high/low resistor?

If so, can you please tell me best way to locate the pink ignition 12V wire ?

Thanks!

Perhaps someone has modified the factory setup, and has installed a Dodge ballast resitor?

Well whadaya know?! I just went looking for a pic of what the blower motor resistor should look like ... and NAPA still lists a resistance wire for that application!

Line Code: UNI (Echlin)
Part Number: ICR-22

Here's a picture of a "generic" blower resistor.
They are usually mounted close to the blower motor and placed in the heater air outlet stream to keep them cool. If you examine it closely it should have a "basic number" of (IIRC) of 18591 ... or at least a basic number that starts with either 18 (heating system) or 19 (A/c system)

The entire engineering number should look something like C8AE-18591-AA or C8AE-19C391-AA.

you are right. What i was looking at is most certainly the heater blower resistor. Looks alot like the one in my 75 bronco. Your help is most appreciated. Now I can go hunt down the resistor wire under the dash and splice into it on 12V side. Thanks.
